The title is a little misleading because I am not aware of any wineries located within the city limits of Winston-Salem North Carolina. But that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of great wineries located very close to the city.
Actually, if you want to experience North Carolina wines at their best then Winston Salem or the surrounding area is where you want to be in the state.
To the east of the city is the wine region named the Yadkin Valley. This is a beautiful area of the state. Which falls between the city to the east and to the west are the beautiful Blue ridge mountains. This region is recognized as the first official wine producing region in the state of North Carolina.
In this valley you will find many wineries, I'm not sure of the exact number but there has to be around 40 different wineries. And what's really great about the Yadkin Valley is all 40 or so wineries are located in very closed proximity. This makes it very to visit more than one and to be exposed to a variety of great wines.
My favorite in this NC valley is name RayLen vineyards. This is a beautiful environment with great wines and food.
But there are also four very good wineries to the south of Winston-Salem. These are located a short 20 mile drive to the city of Lexington NC.
In Lexington your will find Childress Winery, Weathervane, Native Vines and Junius Lindsay Vineyard.
Childress winery is a very upscale establishment with a great restaurant inside. Native Vines is the first winery in the United States owned by Native Americans, a very good cultural experience. Junius Lindsay Vineyard has very beautiful manicured vineyards a great setting to enjoy a glass of wine.
But my favorite in one in Lexington is Weather vane Winery. Great wine and friendly people that's what its all about to me.
