Central Virginia - Our First Winery Adventure of 2013
We were so excited to get back on the road again as we ventured to central Virginia for our first trip of 2013. Our first stop was at Veritas Vineyard & Winery in Afton where we were able to stop and enjoy a bottle of their delicious Rose' on their spacious patio. The next day we drove to Trump Winery in Charlottesville. The Trump tasting room staff is super friendly and I love that the tasting started out with three wonderful sparkling wines. Next we went down the road to Blenheim Vineyards (owned by musician Dave Matthews) and on to KeswickVineyards. Our last two stops of the day were to Glass House Winery in Free Union, VA (such a great atmosphere you will want to stay for awhile) and ended our day at Early Mountain Winery in Madison. On our second day we ventured to three more wineries. The first was a visit to a small boutique winery in Sperryville, Sharp Rock Vineyards. Our next stop was at DuCard Winery in Etlan which has a very talented winemaker and some really great wines. Our last stop was a visit to Reynard-Florence Winery in Barboursville - where we absolutely loved our entire experience. Pictured: A Friday morning visit to Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Charming Lodging in Barboursville, Virginia
The Inn at Dawsonville
We couldn't have asked for a better location than we had at this bed and breakfast located just twenty minutes north of Charlottesville. The Inn at Dawsonville is convenient to the many Charlottesville wineries as well as several wineries that are located north of the city. Our innkeeper, Whit Brinkley, was so hospitable and cooked a delicious breakfast each morning. Both of our second floor rooms (each with private bath) were very spacious and featured extra-comfy beds with luxurious linens. A common room is available with satellite television as well as a large front porch and a few other outdoor cozy nooks where you can drink your morning coffee or enjoy a glass of wine at the end of they day. Visit their website for more photos and information about the accommodations they offer. Pictured: Sharon stands outside the Inn at Dawsonville in Barboursville, Virginia after a delicious breakfast of fresh strawberries plus cheesy eggs and sausage.
Where we're headed:
June 3rd & 4th, 2013 we'll be visiting the following North Carolina wineries:
Old North State Winery, Mount Airy, NC
Shadow Springs Vineyard, Hamptonville, NC
Upcoming destinations:
July: Traverse City Michigan Area Wineries including Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula

Tropics and wine at Weathervane Winery
Just wanted to pass on some news about current events taking place at a great winery located in Lexington, North Carolina. There are two different reasons why I want to mention this winery

Native Wines Winery and Festival Events April 2013
I don't believe we have yet mention this winery on our site. The winery is called Native Vines Winery located in Lexington, North Carolina. This is only a short drive south of Winston Salem, maybe 20 miles.
Now to the reason I have made this post. A lady emailed me the other day telling me she would be staying in the Winston-Salem area most of April 2013 and she was inquiring about any events that may be taking place at the wineries in the region.
She wanted to know specifically:
- If I could recommend a good winery she could visit with her friends.
- If I knew of any wineries in the nearby area that were have any special winery events the last weekend of April.
So after some digging I came up with a couple nice events that would be taking place at Native Wines Winery in the month of April 2013. You can find a made to this winery and also a more in depth review if you follow the link.
If you have never heard of Native Wines in Lexington, NC. This is the first Native American winery in the United States and their wines are loved by most everyone who visits for a taste. That's no lie.
But here are a couple events that will be taking place at the winery in the month of April 2013. These events are not exactly at the winery but this winery will be featured at the two festivals named below.
APRIL 13: BLUE RIDGE WINE FESTIVAL BLOWING ROCK, NC 2 - 6 pm
APRIL 26 & 27: SOUTHERN GATEWAY WINE FESTIVAL & ANNUAL BAR-B-Q CAPITOL COOKOFF DOWNTOWN LEXINGTON, NC
THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT NATIVE VINES WINERY HAS OUT-GROWN OUR CURRENT SET-UP AND WILL BEGIN AN EXPANSION PROJECT THIS SPRING. OUR PLAN IS TO CONTINUE SERVING YOU AS WE GO THRU THIS PROCESS, BUT ASK FOR YOUR PATIENCE AS WE WORK TO CHANGE OUR FACILITY TO BETTER SERVE YOU. Meeting her Parents at Capital Club 16 in Raleigh
I usually write about the wineries in North Carolina but on occasion I like to take a break and writer about something else. But I just wanted to give a shout out to two place I visited over the past weekend while in Raleigh meeting my girlfriend's parents for the first time.
The weekend began on a Friday night at Capital Club 16 in downtown Raleigh. This place is awesome and provided the perfect environment to meet the parents. If you like great steaks and drinks in a historical building with great architecture then the Capital Club is a great choice. And it provides a very laid back and friendly environment to meet the parents in.
OK I guess her mom liked me, because at the end of the night her mom asked me if I would like to come with them to a winery on Saturday night.
The name of the winery we visited the next day was Cloer Family Vineyards. My girlfriend says her mom visits many different wineries through out the Raleigh area but this is her go to winery when she wants her favorite bottle of wine.
To be honest I'm not that big of a wine drinker but spending a few hours at this country winery was definitely a great relaxing time for me.
Cloer Family Winery is located at:
8624 Castleberry Rd.
Apex, NC 27523
Phone: 919.387.5760
I'm sure you know how it feels the first time you meet the parents of a girlfriend that you are serious about... Anyone nervous in Raleigh like me? If you are currently in Raleigh and are looking for a place to eat or spend time with the parents of your new girlfriend I would highly recommend both Capital Club 16 for steaks and Cloer Family Winery for both a great bottle of wine and beautiful scenery.

Winston Salem March 2013 Ownership News
This site is dedicated to covering the different and best wineries found in North Carolina but we also like to cover some little tidbits of information from around the state that sometimes isn't related to wineries but may still serve a purpose to in different business sectors of the state.
Today we have compiled current information on whats going down in Winston Salem.
Acadia Grill - a popular food spot on the south side of Winston-Salem has reopened under new ownership. If you recall, Acadia Grill closed after being open since 1934. Big Mama's Restaurant opened in its place and became known for their southern cooking, and popular place among the locals in Washington Park and South Side neighborhoods. Unfortunately they closed in the fall on 2012.
In steps Erin and Rhonda Lambert who wanted to revive the old Acadia Grill feel and food in the neighborhood. So, with a little hard work, they re-opened the establishment this week. Home cooking, neighborhood characters, stories and all. Acadia Grill is located at 200 W. Acadia Ave @ Broad St. Hours: M-Sat 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Telephone: 722-1364
Old Courthouse to be converted into apartments - The old Forsyth County Courthouse located at the square of Third, Fourth, Main and Liberty St are moving ahead to be converted into apartments. Clachan Properties out of Richmond, Va. is the developer who wants to turn the old courthouse into 57 one and two bedroom apartments with the help of historic tax credits to help defray the cost of construction on the $6 million project.
Clachan Properties is not new to the Winston-Salem market. They developed the former Brown Rogers Dixon building into the highly successful Winston Factory Lofts. They are now working on the second project involving $11 million converting a vacant R. J. Reynolds building in 86 apartments due to be completed by summer 2013.
On top of a number of other apartment projects announced over the last few months. Come late 2014 there should not be a issue of those looking to rent downtown. There will be plenty.

Irish and Celtics at Stonefield Cellars
Happy March!
We are gonna get our Irish on this Saturday for our Soup & Sing (see details below)
and then will be bottling all day Sunday (wanna come watch the fun?) while also
hosting a reception for Melissa Blackwell, glass artist. And winery hopping on
Easter Sunday? Why not? .....All the events for this month are listed right here
and on our website too - yet feel free to pass this email on to your friends and
encourage them to have a splendiferous Stonefield Cellars Winery experience!
Saturday, March 16th, 2012 Special St. Patrick's Day Soup & Sing - 6:30 - 11:00
pm
Reservations for Soup and Sing are Required - Please call 336-644-9908. Soup & Sing
is held once a month on a Saturday night. This is a combination pot-luck dinner,
jam session, and folk gathering for local musicians/singers that harkens back to
a time when there were no radios or TVs and music was what we made together, face
to face, an essential part of our soul as necessary as the food that nourished our
bodies. Many different genres of music may be represented during the evening (bluegrass,
celtic, blues, folk, rock, gospel, etc.), but usually it is acoustic (we do mike
vocals though, so singers can be heard). THIS MONTH WE WILL PLAY LOTS OF CELTIC
TUNES!!!!! If you are not a musician but are a friend or family member of a musician
or are a Friend of Stonefield Cellars that loves wine and music, you are welcome
to come. We appreciate your support of local music and local wine! (Beverage
sales provide the financial support to make this event possible.)
Large Parties/Groups Policy: Due to our policy to preserve the intimacy of the
gathering and the need to stay within our capacity limit, Soup & Sing is not an
event for large private parties or groups (more than 8 people in a single party/group).
We do however rent our barrel room for private parties and we can provide you
with contact info re: bands for hire. We also hold barrel room concerts and outdoor
music events at the winery during which we can provide concert/festival seating
for large groups.
If you are interested in attending, RSVP Natalie Wurz at 644-9908 or email nwurz@stonefieldcellars.com
[mailto:nwurz@stonefieldcellars.com]. You will be given more details about the
evening.
Sunday March 17th, 2012 - 2-5 pm Artist Reception -
Melissa Blackburnis a glass jewelry artist who grew up in the foothills of North
Carolina. She now resides in Greensboro, NC, and creates her unusual glass work
in a little shop in her backyard.
Her jewelry is made from Bullseye fusible glass and from recycled wine (and other
beverage) bottles, including our smoky blue Midnight Moonlight wine bottles. She
fires all her glass in an electric kiln to at least 1500 degrees to melt it into
a solid mass. Then after it has cooled, she uses a diamond wet saw, diamond grinder
and engravers to slice, carve and drill each piece individually.
The pieces are fired again in the kiln after grinding, but just until the outside
of the glass starts to melt and creates a brilliant glossy surface.

Round Peak Winery looking forward
Is it Spring Yet?
If you're like us, you are tired of hearing the weather forecasters predict snow
and are yearning for some warmer weather. We look forward to leaves on the vines
and roses in bloom. We also can't wait to begin hosting events on the back deck
and enjoying the sunsets over Skull Camp Mountain and the Blue Ridge.
Our vines, on the other hand, need a few more weeks of cold weather to make sure
that the buds don't come out too early. So, we are trying to exercise a little
patience. It isn't easy!
It's Pruning Time in the Vineyard
What we do at Round Peak during the winter months? While winter is a slower time
of year, we typically spend January-March doing vineyard maintenance (replacing
posts and grow wires), identifying vines that need to be replanted, and pruning
the vines in preparation for the growing season.
Phoebe & Quake "helping" Danielle prune
the Montepulciano vines
Most of our vines are now over 10 years old and one of our projects this winter
has been to re-arm the vines with new cordons.
Before: This vine needs to be re-armed.
During: Ed cutting the old arms After: Ed tying down new
cordons to the wire
It usually takes 6 weeks or more to cane prune the entire 13 acre vineyard. We
are not able to do it on rainy days due to disease risk to the vines. Also, when
it is very cold, the cordons can break when they are being tied to the grow wire.
The red varietals are pruned before the white ones. Right now, we have pruned all
the reds and the Viognier and Chardonnay will hopefully be completed this coming
week.
Depending on the weather, we may begin seeing green shoots pop out as early as the
end of March or as late as mid-April. Once we see shoots, we start worrying about
frost damage. While we like to see our vines nice and green, we hope to delay bud
break as long as possible.
Coming Soon, Going, & Gone
We "sold out" of many of our whites and dry rose last summer or Fall so we are happy
to announce the release dates of several new wines:

Ohio can order Sanctuary Vineyards wines
Ships wines to Ohio |
I can't tell you how many different people from Ohio I spoke to the last time I was in the Outerbanks of NC. One day alone I was sitting in one of my favorite wineries name Sanctuary Vineyards here in the Outer banks region and in that one day three different groups of people form Ohio walked into the wine bar.
I assumed they all knew each but they were complete strangers as well. And a couple days after that I met another couple from the state.
But what I wanted to touch on here is for these Ohio people that loved the wines at Sanctuary Vineyards but were sadly informed this NC winery wouldn't be able to ship wines to their state if they would want to do some ordering later in the year
But I have some fantastic news:
Wine down your winter with Sanctuary Vineyards Greetings! Sanctuary Vineyards is pleased to announce shipping services to Ohio. To celebrate, we are offering free shipping on all orders of your favorite wines during the month of March. What a great way to melt the winter blues and welcome Spring!
And don't forget about the events at Sanctuary Vineyards

It's the return of the popular seasonal wine Stormy Passion. Friday February the 1st this pomegranate style wine will be available for $13.00 a bottle. The wine was brought back after many requests. This wine is excellent and at $13 a bottle sold at a very reasonable price.
If you like the style of pomegranate wine then make sure you get to Weathervane Winery on the double. I have a feeling that many people will be buying this wine in the case. Hurry before Weathervane Winery runs out!!!

Saturday, January 26th - Songwriter Workshop (5-7pm) and Concert (7:30pm) by David
Russell
David Russell has written award-winning songs, and has collaborated and
performed with regional and national songwriters, performers and producers
(Gamble Rogers, Steve Goodman, Steve Young, John Pennell, Don Oja-Dunaway,
Charlie Robertson, Hershey Reeves, Jim Connor and Dave Durham/HankCochran, just
to name a few ). David's songwriting heroes are writers like Mac MacAnally (who
years ago traded songs with David), John Hartford, Jimmy Webb and the great Hoagy
Carmichael. The crafts of songwriting and performing are in his blood, coming from
a
musical family heritage harkening from Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island.
Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, these are just a few of the genres that David's songs find
roots in.
His songwriting intelligence is matched by his great wit and charm - you will
be inspired and motivated to push your songwriting to the next level!
As a performer, David always delights with a well rounded repertoire and storytelling
that draws the listener in to an intimate experience beyond your average cafe concert.
The Songwriter Workshop. Join David and hone your writing. (5:00-7:00 pm)
David will present examples of his and his friend's successful songs in different
genres- from jingles to art songs. An introduction to the songwriting process,
the workshop will cover: 1) song structure, 2.) lyric writing 3.)tonal tension and
structure 4) songwriting methods of the pros.
Workshop includes a syllabus and song worksheets to take home. The workshop will
be held in a relaxed setting (the beautiful Stonefield Cellars Barrel Room) with
an emphasis on the creative process. The intent is for fledgling writers to take
away fresh ideas and a spark for their work. This is a 2 hour workshop, in the
round, and is an acoustic-only event-- attendees are encouraged to bring their
acoustic instruments and their songs.
